What is MPD?
MPD, short for Music Player Daemon, is a music server. It usually runs on another device in your home, such as a Raspberry Pi, NAS, or computer, and handles your music library and audio playback.
MPD Pilot is a client for that server. It lets you browse your library, control playback, manage playlists, and, when configured, listen on your Apple device as well.
MPD is valued by many audio enthusiasts because it is lightweight, flexible, and works well with self-hosted music libraries. It supports a wide range of audio formats, including MP3, OGG, FLAC, and WAV, and can work with local files, network shares, and internet streams. It also fits well into setups where playback happens on one device while control happens from another.
This makes MPD a good fit for people who want more control over their own music setup, whether that means a simple home server or a more dedicated hi-fi system.
